Theatre

  
  • THEA 4100 - Period Styles of Architecture

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: THEA 3010  or permission of instructor;
    Description: Survey of architectural styles from pre-Greek to the modern period as it relates to theatrical application.
  
  • THEA 4150 - Period Styles of Costumes

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: THEA 3010  or permission of instructor;
    Description: Survey of costumes from antiquity to the modern period, with emphasis on the influence of social, cultural, and religious or traditions on dress.
  
  • THEA 4200 - Independent Research

    Credit Hours 1 to 3
    Variable Credit Hours 1 to 3
    Prerequisite: Department consent
    Description: Opportunity for directed scholarly research in an area of special interest to the student.  Enrollment accepted only after professor has approved a written project proposal from the student.  Variable 1-3 credits.
  
  • THEA 4300 - Lighting Design I

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: THEA 1600  or permission of instructor;
    Description: The study and application of the function and principles of lighting design.  Topics will include design theory, paperwork, and practical application.
     
  
  • THEA 4350 - Acting Workshop

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: THEA 1300  or permission of instructor;
    Description: This course is designed for the advanced acting student to explore alternative approaches to creating a role through scene study and in-depth performance techniques.  the course may include; but is not limited to, research into contemporary trends of performance, studying a particular playwright’s canon or acting theorists’ work.  The course may be repeated up to a total of six credit hours.
  
  • THEA 4401 - Directing II

    Prerequisite: THEA 3400 ;
    Description: Advanced study of directing principles and techniques for the theatrical stage.  Topics will include directorial analysis, composition, blocking, and alternative modern approaches.  Each student is required to complete a focused directing project.
  
  • THEA 4520 - Careers

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: Course restricted to those pursuing theatre and dance major, minors or concentrations; or permission of instructor.
    Description:  Course addresses the skills needed to secure employment in performance or related fields.  Topics will include resumes, headshots, portfolios, unions, self-marketing, interviews, audition techniques and preparation, managers, and regional markets.
  
  • THEA 4550 - Roy Acuff Chair Seminar

    Prerequisite: Department approval;
    Description: Offered once every four years, a research based course to prepare students to experience visiting artists of national/international reputation.  Repeatable one time.  Repeatable one time.
  
  • THEA 4650 - Direction and Performance for the Camera

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: Course restricted for those pursuing theatre and dance majors, minors or concentrations or permission of instructor;
    Description: Students will be introduced to the special skills necessary for performing in the film, television and commercial industries.
  
  • THEA 4660 - Voice-Over Performance

    Prerequisite: THEA 1300 Acting I and THEA 3200 Voice for the Actor or permission of the instructor
    Description: Students are introduced to the different performative styles of voice-over necessary to compete in the commercial, marration, promo and animation/video game industries.
  
  • THEA 4700 - Topics in Women’s Theatre

    Description: Description: Examines the theory and practice of special topics in women’s theatre. Special topics include the works of Eve Ensler, Caryl Churchill, Maria Irene Fornes, Beth Henley, Marsha Norman, and others.
  
  • THEA 4751 - Directed Studies in Theatre

    Variable Credit Hours 1 to 3
    Prerequisite: Department consent
    Description: Directed, concentrated study in a specific area of theatre.  Designed as a substitute for a required course that is needed but not offered in a specific semester.  Permission granted only to allow student a timely graduation.  Variable 1-3 credits.
  
  • THEA 4790 - Lighting Design II

    Prerequisite: THEA 4300  
    Description: Project lighting design with an emphasis on visualization of design concepts, professional graphics, and paperwork standards, and practices.
  
  • THEA 4850 - Scene Painting II

    Prerequisite: THEA 3750  
    Description: Advanced painting techniques for theatrical productions.  Topics will include alternate scene painting tools, stencils, large scale works, and cut drops and scrims.
     
  
  • THEA 4890 - Costume Design II

    Prerequisite: THEA 3890 ;
    Description: Advanced study of theatrical costuming from character analysis through design concept to realization.  Unconventional rendering techniques will be explored.

    Description: Composing and revising scenes and one or two one-act plays for stage performance.
  
  • THEA 4950 - Advanced Playwriting

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: THEA 4900  or ENGL 4900 ;
    Description: Designed to give the student playwright opportunity for in-depth exploration and development of one’s creative voice for stage and performance.
  
  • THEA 4995 - Senior Capstone

    Credit Hours 4
    Prerequisite: Department consent, senior status;
    Description: Summative evaluation in which the student is given an opportunity in their final year of study to demonstrate integrated knowledge and growth in the major.  Each individual senior theatre or dance student will create a substantial work.  Application must be approved.

  • WGS 300A,B,C - Selected Topics in Women’s and Gender Studies

    Credit Hours
    Description: Examination of a selected topic relevant to issues of women or gender, offered on a one-time basis.
  
  • WGS 2050 - Women and Culture: Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies

    Credit Hours
    Prerequisite: ENGL 1020  
    Description: An introduction to fundamental principles of women’s and gender studies; the cultural construction of gender, the cultural roles, depictions and experience of women, past and present; and the impact of feminist movements nationally and internationally.  Service Learning Project included.
  
  • WGS 2060 - Introduction to LGBTQ Studies

    Credit Hours
    Prerequisite: ENGL 1020  
    Description: This course explores constructions of gender, sexuality and sexual orientation and critically assesses traditions and their effects on social policy, popular culture, law and government, science and politics.  Readings and research include history, social studies, activist publications, and memoir and film.  Service Learning Project included.
  
  • WGS 3050 - Women in the Arts

    Credit Hours
    Description: An interdisciplinary, cross-cultural survey of women in the arts. Major emphasis on the visual arts and literature, with attention also to the performing arts. Topics include both the contributions and depictions of women in the arts.
  
  • WGS 3060 - Vagina Monologues

    Credit Hours
    Prerequisite: ENGL 1020  
    Description: An intensive study of Eve Ensler’s script.   The course examines women’s sexuality, spirituality, interpersonal violence, media representations, and LGBTQ issues in national and international contexts.  Students produce the play as a Service Learning Project.
  
  • WGS 3070 - Women and Film

    Prerequisite: WGS 2050  or WGS 2060  or ENGL 2070  or COMM 3950  or SOC 1010  
    Description: This course examines women as subjects and objects in film, and women film-makers. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing films for constructions of gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and class.
  
  • WGS 3080 - Women’s and Gender Studies Practicum

    Credit Hours
    Prerequisite: WGS 2050  or 2060  and six (6) hours of WGS courses; and junior standing.
    Description: A supervised professional and/or social justice work experience that synthesizes the student’s program of study. The student is responsible for negotiating with the director of women’s and gender studies for placement. The student, faculty supervisor and professional or community supervisor will develop a contract of academic and placement responsibilities.
  
  • WGS 4030 - Independent Study

    Prerequisite: Women’s and Gender Studies Minor  
    Description: Students will work with instructor to design a plan of study and projects.

  • WS 4010 - Capstone Seminar in Women’s Studies

    Prerequisite: WGS 2050  and three hours of WS courses
    Description: Students will examine upper-division readings in feminist theory, culminating in a research project and presentation.
