HIST 5063 - Early Modern England 1485-1714

Description: The course focuses on the Tudor and Stewart dynasties, the emergence of England as a nation-state under Henry VI, Henry VIII’s break with Rome, and the establishment of a theocratic church. It also covers Henry VIII’s confiscation of monastic lands, the reign of Edward VI, the reign of Mary Tudor and the reign of Elizabeth I, focusing on her religious compromise.  The course will also address the Stuart dynasty, their poor handling of problems not of their making, which led to a rupture between king and Parliament leading to the English Civil War. The course will also examine the republican dictatorship under Oliver Cromwell.
