Description of Major

Eight concentrations are available to students under the Communication Arts major. Students are offered a wide array of courses leading to successful careers in Broadcast Media, Corporate Communication, Information Specialist, Internet Technology, Media Technologies, Print and Web Journalism, Public Relations, and Sports Broadcasting. All students majoring in the department must complete the following courses in the general education core: COMM 1010  and COMM 2020 . A departmental capstone course, COMM 4920  - Portfolio Development is required of all majors and minors. A minor is required for all majors in the department. The minor can be in the department or a minor from an outside department. Courses for the Communication major cannot be used to count for the Communication minor. A student cannot minor in Public Relations due to PRSA requirements.

Broadcast Media


Graduates in broadcast media are prepared for careers in a variety of broadcast and related areas, including on-air performance, behind the scenes operations, directing, audio and video production, promotion and management.

Corporate Communication


Graduates in corporate communication are prepared for careers in advertising, marketing communications, public relations, media, and management.

Information Specialist


The Information Specialist concentration in Mass Communication is offered completely online, and is intended for students seeking information careers in the public or private sectors. Information careers include work for the U.S. Information Agency as information specialists and in the U.S. Military services as public affairs’ officers. Tennessee and other state and municipal government information-based services such as tourism and economic development; and the promotion and publicity functions within nonprofit agencies, chambers of commerce, and general organizations are interested in the training provided by this concentration.

Internet Technology


This concenration requires a minor in Art Graphic Design or Photography, Communication Arts, or Computer Science and Information Technology.

Media Technology


Graduates in Media Technologies are prepared for careers in digital media, including new technologies such as digital cinema, Internet design and content, and acting/production utilizing these technologies.

Print and Web Journalism majors develop skills for careers at newspapers, book and magazine publications, as well as a variety of Web-related careers.

Public Relations
