HIST 5069 - Colonial Latin America

Description: This course is designed to help students understand the complexities of the region- what the nations of Latin America have in common, and what makes them distinct. This course begins with the wars of independence in the early nineteenth century, and will examine the societies that emerged from these conflicts and the challenges they faced through to the present day, including the political systems that evolved following independence, the economic successes and failures different countries experienced, and the manner in which they tackled the difficult issues of race, class, gender, and cultural identity.
