(34 semester hours)

Two specializations are offered: General Communication and Corporate Communication and one concentration: Media Management.  Upon the completion of all coursework, students must successfully defend the thesis or research paper orally before their graduate committee and answer comprehensive questions about material mastered in courses.

General Communication Specialization

The General Communication Specialization prepares students for doctoral studies and teaching at the high school, community college or university level. Courses in this sequence allow students to apply theoretical understanding to real world communication problems. While this is not a program in Theatre, students are welcome to select up to 21 hours of graduate Theatre courses under the Electives category. This specialization helps to develop particular research skills for those interested in the fields of communication and theatre.

Marketing Communication Concentration

The Marketing Communication Concentration program is designed to prepare current and future managers for careers in marketing communiations (marketing communication, advertising, public relations, sales, print or broadcast media, and other electronic media) or for doctoral studies in communication. The online Marketing Communication Concentration program has been designed with the needs of currently employed professionals in mind as well as offering traditional students the opportunity to complete the degree rapidly. To that end, students may select from a broad-based course offering delivered primarily online but with two courses on campus.

As close to the beginning of their program as possible, students should sign up for COMM 5001 , a course which provides an orientation to graduate study in Communication Arts at APSU.

Media Management Concentration

This concentration enhances Communication Arts graduate students critical thinking, communication skills, creativity, and leadership in the areas of broadcast and cable TV media with the program being delivered primarily online to accommodate both traditional and nontraditional students who work full time in the communication history.  This concentration in Media Management also assists with learning and workforce development needs for the APSU regional coverage area as well as bordering counties in Kentucky and the entire state of Tennessee by offering those currently employed in the areas of broadcast and cable TV operations, marketing, promotions, and sales with an opportunity to grasp the knowledge and skill sets so essential for advancement to electronic media executive positions in sales, marketing, operations, and general management.
