Description of Major
The Philosophy and Religion major consists of three options: Philosophical Studies, Religious Studies, and Ethics, Law, and Political Theory. The Philosophical Studies curriculum is designed to encourage students to think critically and creatively about human existence and the nature of reality. It emphasizes (1) training in critical reasoning and logical analysis; (2) an understanding of the many methods of human inquiry; (3) a survey of the history of philosophy and the history of ethics; (4) the analysis and appreciation of values and their application to moral and political issues; (5) a reflective and tolerant exploration of religion; and (6) the growth of a personal philosophy based on the lifelong search for and appreciation of truth, knowledge, goodness, and beauty.
The Philosophy and Religion Major is good background for most any career area or graduate study option. The degree is sought after by many businesses as an indicator of analytical ability. Philosophy Majors are among the highest scorers of any major on standardized tests. The Religious Studies curriculum is good background for anyone with an interest in the world religions and religious issues or considering a career in religion. The Ethics and Policy Studies concentration is especially good background for law school or work in government.

Ethics, Law, and Political Theory
The Ethics, Law, and Political Theory Specialization is an excellent preparation for law school and careers in government.
Electives
- Select three (3) additional upper division courses with a PHIL prefix or
- Any upper division course from another department approved by advisor and deemed relevant to student’s interests in ethics. 9
Philosophical Studies
The Philosophical Studies Specialization provides a broad background in Philosophical issues and theories. It is good preparation for most any career.
Electives
- Select four (4) courses from any remaining Philosophy courses other than PHIL 1030, 1040, 2200 or
- Any upper division course from another department approved by advisor and deemed relevant to students interests in Ethics. 9
Religious Studies
The Religious Studies Specialization is an excellent background for seminary and careers in Religion as well as for anyone with an interest in world religions and religious issues.
Electives
- Select three (3) courses from any remaining Philosophy courses other than PHIL 1030, PHIL 1040, PHIL 2200 or
- C:AS 4900 Topics (Mystery Religions) or
- GREK 1010 and GREK 1020 or
- Any upper division course approved by advisor deemed relevant to student’s interests in religious studies. 9
