Description of Major

The Department of Languages and Literature offers a Foreign Languages Major with concentrations, specializations, and minors in Classical Civilization, Classical Languages, French, German, Greek, Latin, and Spanish.

Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take LING 4400 and one study abroad course from SPAN 304A or SPAN 304B for Spanish licensure; FREN 3040 for French licensure; or GERM 3040 for German licensure; or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language. Students must also complete the Professional Education minor and Student Teaching. Teacher licensure for grades 7-12 is available in French, German, Spanish, and Latin through concentrations and specializations in the Foreign Languages major. Foreign language majors who transfer from other colleges and universities must earn at least six (6) hours of coursework in each of the two foreign languages taken at Austin Peay.

An oral or, in the case of ancient languages, written proficiency exam and a portfolio are graduation requirements for all Foreign Language majors. Students must see their advisor for more information. A minor is required.

French Concentration with Licensure


Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take LING 4400 and one study abroad course FREN 3040 for French licensure or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language. A professional education minor is required.

German Concentration with Licensure


 Study Abroad Requirements-Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take one study abroad course - GERM 3040 (6-8) for German licensure or present evidence of acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language.  In case GERM 3040 is completed it can substitute for two equivalent GERM 2000 or 3000 level courses.  Therefore, the Study Abroad Requirement does not add credit hours to the total hours required by the major.

Latin Concentration with Licensure


Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take LING 4400 and one study abroad course or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language.

This program satisfies Tennessee guidelines for secondary school licensure.  Students seeking licensure, 7-12 for teaching in Tennessee, must also complete the Professional Education MinorLING 4400, Student Teaching, the PRAXIS II 7-12 teaching exam (code 20624, minimum score 155), the PRAXIS II Latin specialty exam (code 10601, minimum score of 141) and take one-year of Greek, Chinese, French German or Spanish (6-8 hours).  Transfer students must earn at least six (6) hours in Latin at APSU.

Spanish Concentration with Licensure


This program satisfies Tennessee guidelines for secondary shool licensure.

Students seeking licensure, 7-12 for teaching in Tennessee, must also complete the Professional Education Minor, LING 4400, and one study abroad course from SPAN 304A (6-8) or SPAN 304B (6-8) for Spanish licensure or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language.  In case SPAN 304A or SPAN 304B is completed it can substitute for two equivalent Spanish courses. Therefore,the Study Abroad Requirement does not add credit hours to the total hours required by the major. Students must also do Student Teaching and pass the PRAXIS II Spanish specialty exam (code 191, minimum score of 152; and code 192, minimum score of 154).  Transfer students must earn at least six (6) hours in Spanish at APSU.

 

Professional Education Minor


The Professional Education minor, outlined below, is required for all Foreign Language students seeking licensure in their chosen language.

Required for all licensure in all endorsement areas: K-6, 4-8, 7-12, and K-12.

Successful completion of this minor, successful completion of clinical practice (with seminar), and Tennessee-mandated licensure examinations leads to teaching licensure for the grades listed above.  Testing requirements, electronic portfolio development, and other prerequisites for provisional admission and full admission to Teacher Education will require consultation with an education advisor.
