The Department of Psychological Science and Counseling at Austin Peay offers a Master of Science in Counseling with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling.
Admission Requirements
The Counseling program admits for the fall terms on the APSU Clarksville campus, with concentrations available in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. To be admitted, applicants should meet the following admission requirements:
- Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0
- A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in psychology or closely related field (sociology, social work).
- Bachelor’s degree, conferred in any field, from a regionally accredited institution
- A written personal statement of no more than two pages describing the candidate’s personal characteristics that make them suitable for the counseling profession, and an explanation of their reasons for wanting to pursue a career in the counseling profession.
- Receipt of admission from the Counseling department selection committee
Admission to the Counseling program is competitive and selective. Applicants who are admitted typically have a GPA of 3.0 or above and/or GRE scores of 142 or above for the quantitative section and 146 or above for the Verbal section. All documents are reviewed during the consideration process. Priority admission will be given to application whose files are completed and who meet admission requirements prior to February 20th for fall admission. Later applications will be considered on a space-available basis, and those interested in applying after March 1st are encouraged to do so.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Concentration
Master of Science in Counseling – Clinical Mental Health Counseling
The clinical mental health counseling concentration prepares students to work in a variety of community agency settings and/or eventual private practice. Students completing this concentration will have met the educational requirements for licensure in Tennessee as a Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider status. The curriculum requirements include coursework, a 100-hour practicum, a 600-hour internship in a mental health setting and successful completion of a comprehensive exam.

School Counseling Concentration
Master of Science-School Counseling
The school counseling concentration is designed to prepare graduates for school counseling positions at elementary, middle/junior high and high school levels. Graduates will meet the current licensing requirements for the Tennessee Board of Education. The curriculum requirements include coursework, a 120-hour practicum, a 600-hour internship, and successful completion of a comprehensive exam. Students entering the program without prior teaching experience will be required to take two education courses (*) as electives.
