For a Tennessee teaching license, all candidates in this program must complete the edTPA and those who are not job-embedded are required to complete student teaching. If the candidate is not seeking licensure, a written comprehensive exam is required to satisfy the requirement for this degree. 
 

Admission Requirements

Listed below are the required application materials and the associated scores (if necessary) for each.

  • Application for admission
  • Application Fee:  $45 domestic or $55 international
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended
  • Verification of lawful presence in the United States (i.e. submit a license or other approved document)
  • Bachelor’s degree, from a regionally accredited institution showing a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.00
  • Official scores on the Praxis II exam required in your certification area (exceptions are Grades 6-8 Science Licensure and Middle Grades 6-8 Mathematics)
  • Military documents (if applicable)
  • Admission decision by department

Curriculum


The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program provides opportunities for persons who hold baccalaureate degrees to complete initial teacher licensure requirements and a master’s degree concurrently. Concentrations are available in Secondary Education (6-12), Secondary Science Education (6-12), Chemistry and Biology, Elementary Education (K-5), with a specialization in Early Childhood Education (PreK-3), Special Education (K-8 Interventionist), Middle Grades Mathematics (6-8), and Middle School Science (6-8). This degree program is not available to persons who already hold a professional teaching license. However, persons teaching on an alternative license may qualify for admission to the MAT program. Students must complete student teaching or complete alternative licensure requirements for this degree. Completion of a Capstone Project is required for program completion.
