    Description: Diversification of life, evolution of communities, faunas and floras, paleoecologic reconstruction, and evolutionary patterns are all components of paleontology. Current and past literature is explored to gain insight into patterns and processes in the history of life. Techniques in collection and analysis of paleontologic data are explored.
  
  • GEOL 4990 - Geology Field Camp

    Prerequisite: Completion of courses required for Geology Concentration or permission of instructor
    Description: Six week intensive experience in measuring section, stratigraphic and structural interpretation and geologic mapping in a wide variety of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary terrains. Projects involve producing geologic maps and reports. Aerial photographic interpretation skills, mapping, and location determination with GPS.

    Description: Techniques of writing, editing, and oral presentation in the geosciences. Professional geologic reports, abstracts, research proposals and papers are emphasized. Location and critical evaluation of geologic data in print and electronic media will also be addressed.

    Description: Introduction to the German business world (economic/political system), providing students with a basic, practical set of tools (cultural knowledge/vocabulary/relevant history).  Topics include the European Union, environmental protection policies, multiculturalism, and intercultural communication between US and German business practices, and navigating the world of subsidized cultural life in Germany (for music majors).

    The class will cater to students from other disciplines such as education/STEM (engineering)/nursing on an as-needed basis.

  • GERM 4540 - German Literature for the 21st Century (Effective Spring 2022)

    Prerequisite: GERM 2020  
    Description: German Literature for the 21st Century will focus on German literature from the late 20th and early 21st century.  The course will analyze the role of German literature, and of German Graphic Novels in particular, as a medium, which, observes, depicts, analyzes, and provides (sometimes autobiographical) experience with/commentary on important social topics such as race, gender, sexuality, disability, neurodiversity, history, war, and art.  This will lead to the second emphasis of the course: the theory and practice of literary translations from English into German and vice versa.

Global Security Studies

  
  • GSS 2010 - Introduction to Global Security Study

    Description: Security studies is moving from a purely state-centric focus anchored in the military instrument to one considering transnational issues with global implications, implying collaborative effort to address these issues. Topics include conventional and critical security, gender and age, environmental security, international law, migration, intra-state conflict, terror, and American Global power.
  
  • GSS 3020 - Global Strategic Studies

    Description: This is a course on the global dimensions of warfare strategy and tactics regarding new forms of war, such as cyberattacks, intimidation, subversion, exploitation, and exclusion which represent blended threats to world peace and  order. Theory, research, and policy matters are examined from both military and non-military perspectives. Geopolitics, grand strategy and securitization are also examined in relation to contemporary world problems.

    Description: Designed to help students recognize and control injury risk factors through an introduction to the public health approach to injury prevention. Includes skills training for certification in CPR, AED, and first aid to provide immediate and temporary care in the event of an injury or sudden illness.

  • HHP 2030 - Youth and Adolescent Health

    Description: Offers teachers and others working with school-age persons an understanding of key health issues. Focus is on health topics related to family living, including intimacy, reproductive health and STDs, mental health including addictive behaviors, stress and suicide, and injury prevention and safety. Educational and risk reduction strategies are featured.
  
  • HHP 2040 - Youth Sports: Trends and Issues

    Description: This course will examine issues with the expanding youth sports environment. Topics include gender identity, burnout, hazing, pay-to-play and other trending topics. Students will examine these issues from the perspective of youth athletes, coaches, administrators, parents, fans, taxpayers, sport psychologists and educators.
  
  • HHP 2050 - Community and Environment Health

    Description: An examination of the individuals and processes involved in the functioning of public and private community health agencies. The concepts of ecology and how ecological problems affect the quality of a healthful life are also presented.
  
  • HHP 2070 - Principles of Strength and Conditioning

    Description: This course will focus on how to design programs in the areas of resistance training, flexibility, plyometrics, speed and agility, and aerobic training. The ability to teach and demonstrate proper technique will also be emphasized.  A lab is included.

  • HHP 2110 - Athletic Coaching of Football

    Description: Overview of football theory, techniques, and fundamentals. Students are afforded opportunities to analyze game films, practice fundamentals, quiz varsity coaches about their specialties, learn how to organize practice and games, and learn basic rules of football.
  
  • HHP 2120 - Rhythmic Movement and Educational Gymnastics

    Description: Scope, content and skill practice of both the educational gymnastics and rhythmic movement programs will be explored. The student will have the opportunity to demonstrate effective teaching strategies in a laboratory setting. Emphasis is placed on planning and organizing activities in grades K-12.

    Description: This course will examine and explore positive mental health. Underlying theories related to positive emotions and happiness will be examined. A major focus of the course will be on the practice of skills that lead to positive emotions and happiness.

    Description: This course will cover various coaching strategies and issues. Discussion will consist of caching different age groups, ability levels and gender.   • HHP 4020 - Introduction to Occupational Safety and Health

    Description: This is an introductory, three credit hour course that focuses on the role of Occupational Safety and Health in protecting and promoting the safety, health, and well-being of workers.  Students will gain an understanding of current OSHA laws, health issues, and strategies related to identifying and reducing occupational safety and health problems that may result in occupational related illnesses and injuries in various types of work.
  
  • HHP 4030 - Living, Dying, Grieving

    Description: This course is designed to allow students a means by which to examine biological, philosophical, socio-economic, and cultural viewpoints of living, aging, death and dying, and grieving. A balance of facts, activities, and personally confronting issues are incorporated.

  • HHP 4050 - Implementing Health Behavior Changes

    Description: Designed to help students understand specific concepts and complex systems related to changing health behaviors for clients in variety of settings.  Current methods in designing programs that encourage individuals to take responsibility for their own state of health; thus, changing health risk behavior patterns to behaviors that move individuals toward an optimum state of wellness.

    Description: A study of fraudulent advertising and practices in the health field such as healing practices, dietary fads, reducing agents, and other healing arts which now comprise only a portion of the modern “medicine show.”

    Description: Underlying factors of human health and common infectious and non-communicable diseases are reviewed.  Strategies for promoting and protecting health are introduced.

    Description: The focus is on the human or personal aspect of sexuality. Emphasis is placed on attitudes, emotions, and behavior patterns as related to the development of healthy sexual lifestyles rather than on the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system. Students are encouraged to integrate their own life experiences with the academic materials.
  
  • HHP 4220 - Analysis of Movement

    Description: Designed to develop a basic understanding of how and where the body moves and what the body can do. Opportunities will be provided to demonstrate an understanding of the mechanical principles and concepts of movement and to apply these concepts of movement.  A lab is included.
  
  • HHP 4240 - Introduction to Motor Learning

    Description: The study of the application of psychological and physiological principles to learning motor skills and strategies.
  
  • HHP 4250 - Physiology of Exercise

    Description: Constitutes the scientific basis of physical activity and the development of physical training programs. Factors affecting muscle contraction, nervous control of muscular activity, effects of exercise on body function, muscle strength, fatigue and recovery, and weight management will be studied.
  
  • HHP 4300 - Introduction to Stress Management

    Description: An introductory study of stress, stressors, and stress intervention techniques. This course complements other health offerings by giving students the opportunity to learn about stress as related to current health problems.
  
  • HHP 4350 - Health Risk Appraisal and Fitness Assessment

    Credit Hours 3
    Prerequisite: Sophomore standing
    Pre/Corequisite HHP 4250  
    Description: An explanation of health risk appraisal, exercise testing and exercise prescription, for general populations based on guidelines established by the American College of Sports Medicine.  Students will administer and participate in various exercise tests that cover the five areas of fitness; cardiorespiratory endurance, muscle strength, muscle endurance, flexibility and body composition.
  
  • HHP 4390 - Strategic Planning and Policy

    Description: The study of policy and planning techniques applied to organizations in the health care delivery system.
