CPSY 8620 - Trauma and Resilience: Theories and Intervention

Credit Hours 3
Prerequisite: Admission to the Counseling Psychology PsyD program
Description: This course provides the student with a comprehensive exploration of the psychological trauma field, including the history and current theories in the field, the nature of trauma (sexual abuse, combat, and natural disasters), how trauma affects individuals and systems, grief reactions, and traumatic stress. Evidencebased practices in the trauma treatment will be emphasized. A variety of theoretical frameworks are presented, including cognitive, neurobiological, clinical, and socio-cultural (including main controversies surrounding the field of trauma). A strengths-based, culturally-informed perspective will be applied.
