Austin Peay State University’s department of biology provides an intellectual and motivational environment for career development in many areas of biology. Students can pursue training in field biology and zoology, animal and plant physiology, microbiology, and environmental assessment.

B.S. Degree Requirements

  • Earn a minimum of 120 semester hours of credit
  • Earn at least 39 credit hours in courses numbered 3000-4999 or upper division transfer credits
  • Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 in all courses attempted
  • Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 in the major

Biology Major


Major Focus Areas: 20 Credit Hours (optional but highly encouraged)


Focus Areas:  Choose 20 credit hours within a focus area
          A Focus Area is not required but may be needed for the student to fulfill the 39 credit hour upper division requirement and the 120 credit hour degree requirement.  Students pursuing a career in a Pre-Professional Health program are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor and complete the Pre-Professional Health minor instead of a Focus Area.

General Electives: 11 Credit Hours


  • Any selection of courses in the University curriculum to complete the 120 credit hour requirement

Biology with Teaching Licensure Specialization


To be eligible for teacher licensure in grades 7-12, students must complete the prescribed courses, accompanied by the Professional Education minor.

Professional Education Minor: 35 Credit Hours


Required for Tennessee teacher licensure in Biology, grades 7-12

Successful completion of this minor, Residency I and II, and Tennessee-mandated licensure examinations leads to teaching licensure for grades 7-12. Testing requirements and other prerequisites for provisional admission and full admission to Teacher Education will require consultation with an education advisor. During Residency semesters, students must be available to spend several weeks in schools and may not be enrolled in classes which conflict with this schedule.  Students should plan to complete all other coursework before beginning Residency I.
