Each focus area is a minimum 36 hours of related course work in the same discipline. 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level).
Additional Graduation Requirements
- 120 hours required for graduation (cannot count Developmental Courses).
- 50 hours from a 4-year institute.
- 39 hours upper division (3000/4000 level).
- Earn at least 30 APSU semester credit or 25 percent of degree requirements of APSU semester hours credit and earn at least 24 hours credit during the junior or senior years.
- Earn a cumulative GPA of 2.00 in all courses attempted at any regionally accredited college or university, for all courses completed at APSU, and for all courses completed at APSU, and for all courses used to satisfy the requirements of a major or focus area and a minor, if applicable.
- Apply no more than 60 hours of credit earned by testing and other non-traditional means toward a baccalaureate degree.

Arts Focus Area
Students seeking a generalist degree with an arts focus area gain exposure to a diverse selection of courses in related fields. Students may tailor course work to develop creative and critical thinking skills in such fields as graphic design or visual and performing arts. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000) level. Courses used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours the focus area.
Education Focus Area
While not providing students with certification to teach this focus area draws from education related disciplines to allow students to take the topic-specific courses that will help them obtain their career objectives. Students might work with pre-school aged children or with after-school programs and agencies, as well as certain social service agencies that serve children. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level).
Health Focus Area
The Health Focus Area draws from a number of disciplines to allow students to explore health care issues, public health topics, and factors related to physical and emotional well-being. Students will achieve a generalist’s understanding of the vast array of concerns affecting the health professions. Students could use this degree to work in health departments, educational settings, other organizations that don’t require specialized skills or to use as preparation for graduate studies. A minimum of 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level). Courses used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours in the focus area.
Humanities Focus Area
The Humanities focus area draws from a number of disciplines to allow students to study the human condition through literature, history, philosophy, and the arts. Students will obtain a generalist’s understanding of the vast array of topics with these disciplines and could use this degree to satisfy personal interests, to prepare for graduate studies or to work in any career where solid liberal arts experience is desired. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level). Courses used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours in the focus area.
Multi-Disciplinary Focus Area
Students combine two existing APSU minors for a multi-disciplinary focus area. Each minor must consist of 18 hours, 12 hours of which must be upper division courses. Sample combinations are:
- Minors in African-American Studies and Women’s Studies
- Minors in Leadership Science and Psychology
- Minors in Sociology and Criminal Justice
- Minors in Decision Sciences and Statistics
- Minors in Literature and Theatre
Capstone Course or Internship………………..3 hours/6 hours*

Organization Management Focus Area
While not a degree in business, the BSGS with a focus area in organization management allows students to obtain knowledge in an array of management disciplines. Students may craft their individual degrees by combining courses in numerous fields that correspond with their personal career goals. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be uppder division (3000 or 4000 level). courses used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours in the focus area.
Social and Behavioral Sciences Focus Area
Students in pursuit of a BSGS degree with a Focus area in the Social and Behavioral Sciences can choose from numerous fields to take courses that are applicable to all facets of life. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level). Courses used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours in the focus area.
Stem Focus Area
Students seeking a generalist degree with a focus area in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students may tailor work to acquire basic and applied scientific skills for a variety of settings, including research, graduate studies, and effective preparation for professional programs. A minimum 36 hours of related course work is required with 18 hours in the focus area must be upper division (3000 or 4000 level). Course used to meet core requirements cannot count for hours in the focus area.
