Description of Major

The department presently offers a concentration in hospitality administration and is proposing the addition of two new concentrations, one in leadership science and the other in organizational administration.  (The proposals are in process.) We have identified five major competencies that students should seek to develop regardless of the concentration they are pursuing. These are communication proficiency, strategic thinking, ethical behavior, cultural awareness, and knowledge integration. For each of these competencies, we have proposed at least one course that would satisfy that competency. A document is attached which presents the major core competencies and the course (or courses) that could satisfy each requirement. Where more than one course has been listed, students will be advised into the course that is most appropriate for the competency they are pursuing. Given the structure of the major core, as outlined in the attached document, and the presence of nine hours of within-major electives (see attached side-by-side document), movement between concentrations in the department will be
possible with minimal or no disruption to a student’s academic progress if their interests change.

The major goal of this concentration is to provide an opportunity for students with associate degrees, certificates, and training in the hospitality/restaurant/hotel/culinary arts areas to complete a bachelor’s degree.  These students will be able to utilize their lower division coursework as well as their work experiences in addition to the prescribed upper division coursework and other credits required for a bachelor’s degree.  The program will be offered online in order to accommodate the non-traditional student, military students, and others not geographically located in the APSU area.  Total credits required for this program:  120 Credit Hours.
