Description of Major

The Department of Health and Human Performance offers a major in Health and Human Performance. Concentrations are offered in Applied Exercise Science, Health Care Management, Human Movement, Public Health and K-12 Teaching. A minor is available in Health, in Physical Education, and in Coaching.

All students completing a major in Health and Human Performance must take the University Senior Exit Exam and the HHP Senior Exit Exam during the last semester of study at the University.

Applied Exercise Science Concentration


The applied exercise science concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for fitness positions in hospitals, retirement centers, corporate wellness centers, YMCA settings, community recreation programs, and private fitness centers.  Students who enroll in this concentration are also interested in pursuing Physical Therapy (PT), Occupational Therapy (OT), Athletic Training, and/or other post-baccalaureate program.

Communication Sciences and Disorders Concentration


A bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Communication Sciences and Disorders will prepare students for graduate education in audiology and speech-language pathology. The degree may also be a pathway for graduate study or careers in a variety of other fields such as healthcare, education, science, and public policy. The curriculum will combine academic courses and clinical education.

Health Care Management Concentration


The Health Care Management concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for employment as a manager in a variety of health and human service organization settings both in the private and public sectors, including medical centers and systems, health departments at the local, regional, and state levels: home health-care agencies, health maintenance organizations, and insurance companies, hospitals, surgical care centers, assisted living centers, nursing homes, physician group practices, and volunteer organizations.

Human Movement Concentration


K-12 Teaching Concentration


The K-12 Teaching Concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for teaching health and physical education and/or coaching in grades K-12.  The program meets all Tennessee and CAEP guidelines.  The Professional Education minor (23 credits) is required for licensure.

Public Health Concentration


The public health concentration provides students the opportunity to prepare for entry-level public health, health education, or community health positions aimed at promoting, maintaining, and improving individual and community health in a variety of settings.  Emphasis is placed on competency-based skills required by the workplace.  Students completing this concentration may be eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam, a voluntary individual certification, after a review of academic transcript(s).
