Education Specialist, Ed.S.
Education Specialist (Ed.S.) - 30 or 39 semester hours
The Education Specialist program provides students with a degree beyond their master’s while conducting original research (i.e. field study). This Education major has concentrations in Administration and Supervision (licensure or non-licensure), Elementary Education, and Secondary Education.
Admission Requirements
Listed below are the required application materials and the associated scores (if necessary) for each.
All applicants must submit the following items to the College of Graduate Studies:
- Application for admission
- Application Fee: $45 domestic or $55 international
- Official transcripts from all colleges attended
- Verification of lawful presence in the United States (i.e. submit a license or other approved document)
- Evidence of an earned master’s degree showing a GPA of 3.25
- Official scores on the general test of the GRE with minimum 145 verbal and 140 quantitative scores or a 387 on the Miller’s Analogy Test (MAT)
- Military documents (if applicable)
Administration and Supervision with licensure:
Applicants who are seeking administrator licensure must also submit the following materials:
- A valid teaching license
- A letter of support from your principal who will agree to mentor you and provide opportunities to complete job-embedded assignments
- A letter of recommendation from a recent supervisor/practicing administrator
- Three years of current summative teacher evaluations*
- A one-page (double-spaced) philosophy of education
Once your application is complete, you will be asked to participate in a program entrance assignment.
*Once you have been accepted, you must submit the TN Department of Education Experience Verification Form within the first semester as evidence of 3 full years of classroom teaching.

Administration and Supervision Concentration
Licensure option (39 hours)
Students seeking TN administrator licensure will complete three courses in addition to the 30-hour licensure program as well as complete and orally defend a field study:
Non-licensure option (30 hours)
Students not seeking administrator licensure will complete the following courses:
Elementary Education or Secondary Education Concentration

Research Requirements
Research Plan IV:
The EdS degree requires the completion and oral defense of a five-chapter field study, which includes original research of a problem related to your professional practice.
