The English major, leading to the B.A. degree, provides the foundations for a variety of careers. 
 

Our classes will guide you through the breadth of literature and beyond. Language is a powerful tool; we will teach you the critical approach to language and how it has always shaped the world.
 

Instead of asking what you can do with an English major, it is better to ask, “What can’t you do with an English major?” The skills you learn in our English courses help prepare you for countless careers, to include, but not limited to: Literary Agent, Author, Critic, Legal Researcher, Librarian, Reporter, Science Writer, Campaign Manager, Public Relations Manager, Social Media Manager, Teacher, Professor, Content Creator etc.

Program Student Learning Outcomes


English

  • Examine written and spoken language in a technical and scientific way, with reference to linguistic structure and sociohistorical context.
  • Analyze the use of language and rhetoric in literature and other forms of public communication.
  • Analyze race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other issues in literature by underrepresented authors.
  • Conduct research and ethically and professionally synthesize arguments from secondary sources into students’ own arguments
  • Compose documents or deliver speeches in rhetorically effective, focused, clear, and grammatical prose.

 

English Education Concentration

  • Student teachers will be able to develop standards and objectives for learning that are clearly communicated, connected to state standards, logically sequenced.
  • Student teachers will be able to organize content and create a learning environment to motivate their students.
  • Student teachers will be able to present instructional content that establishes the purpose of the lesson, communicates relevant information, and uses appropriate examples, illustrations, and concepts.
  • Student teachers will be able to structure lessons with coherent sequencing, appropriate pacing, and efficient routines.
  • Student teachers will be able to ask meaningful questions and provide effective feedback.
  • Student teachers will be able to demonstrate content mastery and awareness of students’ needs.

 

Professional, Technical, and Creative Writing Concentration

  • Apply logical reasoning to literary text and/or linguistic structures.
  • Analyze race, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and other issues in literature by underrepresented authors.
  • Analyze the use of language and rhetoric in literature and other forms of public communication.
  • Identify and analyze the skills listed in items 1-3 in their classmates’ won work through peer-to-peer review and/or full-class workshops.
  • Identify and adapt to the rhetorical needs and situation of an audience.
  • Apply appropriate technologies, such as Adobe Suite, Canva, Microsoft Office Suite, and many others as needed.
  • Identify and choose the appropriate register for communicating with a given audience.
  • Identify and adapt to the rhetorical situation of a given writing project’s audience and produce focused, persuasive documents in clear, correct, and concise prose.
  • Read secondary sources from guided or independent research and synthesize the arguments into their own writing.
  • Compose focused, craft-conscious creative work in clear intentional meter, prose, and style.
  • Compose craft-conscious responses to their peers’ original work.
  • Cite all source materials according to professional standards.
  • Critically curate information using appropriate technologies (archives, databases, and other digital platforms).
  • Evaluate digital sources, making judgments about quality, relevance, usefulness, and/or accuracy of information.
  • Interpret, synthesize, and present information using a variety of modalities.
  • Engage in editing online publications.
