The Criminal Justice degree will prepare a student for a successful career in a growing field. This program is designed for students who want to work in law, law enforcement, corrections, victim advocacy, social services, or governmental organizations. Students will receive instruction on the current issues in the subject as well as a broad understanding of theory and practice in the field discipline. The major covers important foundation areas, including the basics of the system, research methods, theory, and law, but also instructs students on more specific coursework in crime and deviance, the institutions and processes of criminal justice, and courts and law. For this degree a student must complete at least 33 upper division (3000-4999) credit hours. A departmental exit exam is required the last semester before graduation for all criminal justice majors. For those interested in Homeland Security fields, the Criminal Justice Major has an optional Homeland Security Concentration within the Criminal Justice Degree. The demand for personnel educated in the highly specialized field of homeland security has escalated steadily since 9/11, with career opportunities in city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies and/or private businesses and industries.
