The Department of Languages and Literature offers a Foreign Languages Major with ten specializations; and minors in Classical Civilization, Classical Languages, French, German, Greek, Latin, and Spanish.

Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take LING 4400  and one study abroad course from SPAN 304A  or SPAN 304B  for Spanish licensure; FREN 3040  for French licensure; or GERM 3040  for German licensure; or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language. Students must also complete the Professional Education minor and Student Teaching. Teacher licensure for grades 7-12 is available in French, German, Spanish, and Latin through specializations in the Foreign Languages major. Foreign language majors who transfer from other colleges and universities must earn at least six (6) hours of coursework in each of the two foreign languages taken at Austin Peay.

An oral or, in the case of ancient languages, written proficiency exam and a portfolio are graduation requirements for all Foreign Language majors. Students must see their advisor for more information. A minor is required.

This program satisfies Tennessee guidelines for secondary school licensure. Students seeking licensure, 7-12 for teaching in Tennessee, must also complete the Professional Education Minor, LING 4400 , SPAN 304A  or SPAN 304B , Student Teaching, and the PRAXIS II Spanish specialty exam (code 191, minimum score of 152; and code 192, minimum score of 154). Transfer students must earn at least six (6) hours in Spanish at APSU.
