    Description: Community Health provides a theoretical background for the study of community health nursing and is based on the synthesis of nursing theory and public health science.  Emphasis is on health promotion, health maintenance and disease prevention amoung populations.  The courses assists students to recognize and analyze the interrelationships between individuals, families, population groups, and communities in determining the health status of each.  the impact of political, economic, social, environmental, and cultural concerns on the health populations are examined.

    Description: This course contains advanced anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of body systems in relation to an individual’s health across the lifespan. The course lays a foundation for the management of primary care issues of patients, families, and populations.

    Description: This course builds upon the nurse’s basic and experiential knowledge of physical assessment. The course focuses on the advanced, comprehensive assessment skills required to provide primary health care to patients across the lifespan. Focus is placed on the development of advanced physical assessment techniques, communication skills, documentation, clinical reasoning, and the differential diagnosis process. Theoretical contexts of health promotion are integrated and applied to clinical findings.

    Description: This course prepares the advanced practice nurse to conduct focused and comprehensive health assessments of clients across the lifespan. The process of diagnostic reasoning is emphasized as the primary means of collecting and analyzing data obtained from the client history, physical examination, and diagnostic procedures.

    Description: This clinical lab course emphasizes the application of advanced assessment techniques to perform focused and comprehensive health assessments of clients across the lifespan. Clinical analysis and synthesis of physical assessment data and diagnostic reasoning skills are developed. Because this is a clinical course, you will be expected to devote approximately 4 hours of your time each week to the assignments and activities associated with this lab.

    Description: An in-depth scientific knowledge base relevant to selected pathophysiological states confronted by advanced practice nurses is explored. This course provides a basis for the foundation of clinical decisions related to selected diagnostic tests and the initiation of therapeutic regimens. Pathophysiology across the lifespan is correlated to clinical diagnosis and management.

    Description: This course provides advanced pharmacology and therapeutics used in the treatment of selected health conditions commonly encountered by the advanced practice nurse.   • NURS 5106 - Healthcare Policy with an Emphasis on Prevention and Population Health

    Description: This course is designed to provide the student with opportunities to explore population and community-based health care principles that impact the client and health care delivery. The course will explore the U.S. preventative task force and determinants of primary and secondary prevention. Notably, the course will provide the student knowledge on how the social determinants of health impact the overall health of a community. Quality, safety, and healthcare finance will be emphasized. Resources will be discussed in relation to availability, barriers, and access to care.
  
  • NURS 5107 - Scientific Inquiry

    Description: This course incorporates research methods of inquiry, terminology, and lays the foundation for evidence based practice. Guided by theoretical frameworks, the foundation of qualitative and quantitative methods are explored. Current issues in nursing research, including rigor, critique, and dissemination of evidence are discussed. Students will begin to explore a clinical problem of interest and complete APSU research training certificate. Analysis of research studies and the development of a research question in the PICOT (Population/patient /problem, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Time) format are outcomes of this course.
  
  • NURS 5108 - Advanced Role Development with an Emphasis on Quality, Safety, and Ethics

    Description: This course follows the evolution of advanced knowledge in nursing from a historical perspective to the present and explores future issues and challenges in organizational leadership. Quality, safety, and ethical decision making in practice setting will be emphasized.     Description: This course provides a multidisciplinary background in the science of health care quality management. The history and evolution of the quality movement, theories and thought leaders, current quality of care issues, research and innovations, intervention strategies, and instruments will be covered; as well as an analysis of quality management system models in health care.  The student will learn to develop and plan for execution of quality improvement plans and will use a quality indicator assessment program, such as AHRQ or NDNQI, as the framework to develop a paper that identifies quality indicators, their measurements and the nursing interventions to improve the quality measurement. Valued‐based purchasing will be defined and interventions to assure quality and cost containment will be discussed.

    Description: This course is the foundation of informatics study. It provides the theoretical framework for information management within various healthcare settings.  Topics will include an overview of healthcare information systems and applications and national healthcare information management initiatives.

  • NURS 5402 - Healthcare Information Systems and Technology Integration


    Prerequisite: Admission to RODP MSN Program or Graduate Studies
    Description: This course focuses the healthcare professional on the foundations of information system hardware and software interaction inclusive of the structure and function of networks and the Internet.  Strategic planning tactics for technology assessment and integration will prepare students to lead technology integration projects in practice.  Additional topics will include computer hardware found in healthcare information systems, interface standards, as well as human-computer interaction such as ergonomics and workflow analysis.

    Description: This course provides an introduction to the most frequently used statistical techniques used in analyzing healthcare data. Statistical topics include
    data management, descriptive statistics, reliability and validity, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance, correlational and linear regression analysis, Chi‐Square, nonparametric methods, survival analysis and formal presentation of the results. In addition, the course will explore the concepts related to complex data analysis within the healthcare environment and will focus on healthcare practice outcomes for quality improvement.

    Description: This course will expand on the content learned in Primary Care Practicum I. The clinical course will continue assimilation into the family nurse practitioner role.  The focus of the course is clinical immersion with the guidance of the preceptor and faculty in a primary care setting to include individuals and families across the lifespan (infants, children, adults, geriatrics). Students must also complete 20 hours of clinical pre/peri-natal care in an OB/GYN outpatient setting. This course requires an on-campus intensive. (180 total clinical hours)
