Health Services

Ellington Building 104

Website:  http://www.apsu.edu/healthservices                                                                                                   Phone:  931-221-7107

The University provides evidence-based health care guided by standards set forth by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education and the American College Health Association. The A.R. Boyd Health Services is located in the Ellington Building, room 104. Health care for routine and minor illnesses and injuries is provided by board certified family medicine physicians and family nurse practitioners.  Additional  services include gynecological concerns, family planning, well-patient physical examinations, allergy injections, immunizations, tuberculin testing, laboratory and phlebotomy services, and health education. Services are available to APSU students, staff, and faculty. Students are assessed a health service fee for each semester enrolled that covers the cost of office visits. Staff and faculty seeking services through the clinic are required to pay an access fee for each visit. All patients will be billed for laboratory tests, medications received in the clinic pharmacy, immunizations, and procedures. Major illnesses are referred to the patient’s primary care provider or to local physicians/specialists as appropriate. Patients will be responsible for all costs associated with referral to off-campus facilities and providers. No medical services will be provided until a health history is completed and on file. In addition to this initial record, the University and Boyd Health Services reserves the right to require additional examinations and/or immunizations during any time the student is enrolled at the University.

Services may be denied to patients that violate the Student Code of Conduct or intentionally provide false information to Health Services staff or providers. Patients whose illness or injury is outside the scope of clinic services will be referred to a provider or facility equipped with resources required to treat the patient’s condition.

Public Safety – Campus Police

The APSU Campus Police station is open and staffed 24 hours a day, and is located in the Shasteen Building behind the football stadium. Campus Police Officers patrol all institution property by automobile, electric vehicle, and by foot.  The sworn officers attend the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA) and are certified/meet state standards and requirements.

The jurisdictional area extends to all facilities owned, operated, and leased by the Board of Regents, as well as public roads and right-of-ways contiguous to that property. They are armed and empowered with the same arrest authority as city and county officers. Campus officers work closely with local and state police and emergency officials, and share a common radio network. Police officers are augmented on campus by security officers and by the Student Patrol, which assist in parking and traffic control and in security during special events, and provide a security escort service for students during evening hours. Other crime prevention programs run throughout the year, including crime prevention briefings and a program for recording and engraving serial numbers on valuable items of property. Public Safety is also responsible for coordinating homeland security efforts and APSU’s Emergency Preparedness Plan. For more information, contact Campus Police at 931-221-7786. For emergencies call 9-1-1.

Sickness and Accident Insurance

The Tennessee Board of Regents has contracted to provide, on a voluntary basis, sickness and accident insurance. The plan, including hospital and accident benefits, is available to full-time and part-time students and their family members at a reasonable cost. Students may obtain more information about this plan at Boyd Health Services in Ellington Student Services Building, at Student Affairs in the University Center, Room 206 or online at http://www.apsu.edu/healthservices/insurance. Students are strongly encouraged to have comprehensive health insurance during their time of enrollment at the University.

Office of Disability Services

Morgan University Center 114

Website:  http://www.apsu.edu/disability

A person with a disability is someone with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities.  A person is considered to be a person with a disability if he/she has the disability, has a record of the disability, or is regarded as having the disability.

Accommodations are academic adjustments or auxiliary aids that provide equal access to programs and services. A few examples are print and audio materials in alternate formats, extended time or taking an exam in a minimal distraction area, recording a lecture or having a note-taker and assistive technology to read and navigate a computer.

It is the responsibility of the student to register with the Office of Disability Services and request accommodations.  The first step is to complete an Intake Form.  The form can be accessed from  http://www.apsu.edu/disability/forms. Students are encouraged to contact the office for guidelines pertaining to the specific documentation required.  The Office of Disability Services can be contacted at (931) 221-6230 Voice or (931) 221-6278 TTY, Morgan University Center, 114.

Tuition Reduction

A Tennessee resident who is permanently and totally disabled may register in courses for credit on a space available basis and pay a maximum tuition of $70 and all applicable fees or may audit a course if space is available at no cost (according to Tennessee law) by filing an Application for Tuition Reduction due to Disability and submit proof that you are considered 100% disabled through Social Security or other appropriate state or federal agency.  To request tuition reduction for disability, you must submit this documentation for each term of enrollment.  Requests must be submitted prior to the last day of registration.  For additional information, contact the Office of Disability Services at (931) 221-6230 Voice or (931) 221-6278 TTY, Morgan University Center, 114.

Parking

Disabled parking decals are issued to qualified students/faculty/staff in lieu of any other decal.  Decals are obtained from public safety/campus police upon the presentation of a license or placard issued by any state specifically to the person requesting the decal.  Decals may be obtained by visiting public safety/campus police at the Shasteen Building, 133.  Temporary disabled permits are issued under the authority of the director of Health Services and entitle the bearer to the same parking privileges for short periods of time.  Temporary disabled permits may be obtained by visiting Boyd Health Services, Ellington 104.

Committee for Persons with Disabilities

The committee has the responsibility for developing policies related to the services and activities for people with disabilities on campus.  In addition, the committee should monitor questions relative to procedures and access, and make recommendations directly to the president concerning these matters.

University Housing

Miller Hall 121

Web Address: www.apsu.edu/housing/

The University believes that life in campus housing provides students with an essential part of the educational experience. Living in a residence hall/apartment affords students opportunities for involvement in learning communities, campus activities, shared responsibilities and community experiences. Since the majority of students’ study and involvement patterns are formed early, the University requires that all full-time single freshmen students under 21 years of age, not residing with their parents or legal guardians, must reside in University housing and participate in a University meal plan while in University housing.

The University has accommodations for approximately 1,900 students. Single students are housed in residence halls, generally two to a room, or Meacham Apartments and Hand Village, four to an apartment, under the supervision of professional and student staff.  Honors housing is available and living-learning communities are located in Harvill Hall, buildings 300 and 400 of Hand Village and Meacham Building 100.  One, two, and three bedroom apartments are available for married students, single parents with dependent children, or single students age 21 or older with no dependents.

All resident students must provide their own bed linens, towels, and other personal accessories. Students are responsible for the care and cleaning of their rooms. Laundry facilities are available in all residence halls/apartments. Internet, cable, and in-house movie/information channel are provided. All residences are smoke free.

Application for University Housing should be made online at www.apsu.edu/housing. Housing contracts are for the full academic year (fall and spring semesters including winter break) and renewed annually. Please refer to Housing Licensing Agreement for fee adjustment policies and deadlines.
