SW 5110 - Community Based Participatory Research for Health (effective Spring 2022)

Action Research, Participatory Action Research and Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) share the central premise that research with, by, and for a community is a collaborative partnership with multiple stakeholders across race, class, economic, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation. The aim of CBPR is to combine “knowledge and action for social change” to improve social disparities marginalized populations experience.

This course engages students in collaborative and inquiry-based learning to meet identified community needs. Service Learning is an option for active learning and is “a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities” (National Commission on Service Learning).

The goal of this online elective is to provide students with theories, principles, values, and related strategies for research and social change with a given community, agency (or optional clinic service learning) setting.
