The friendly faculty and staff in the Department of Mathematics are dedicated to providing a quality education in mathematics. Mathematics provides elegant and effective tools for solving problems in virtually every area of human endeavor, and is especially appealing to students who like to solve problems.

The study of mathematics will enhance your critical thinking skills and provide you with an excellent background for careers in almost any field, including science, engineering, education, law, and medicine.

Lower Division Requirements for the Mathematics Core: 14 Credit Hours


Upper Division Requirements for the Mathematics Core: 13 Credit Hours


Note


In addition to the major core, each student must select an area of specialization. Each specialization requires additional coursework.  There are four options for the area of specialization:  mathematics, statistics, applied mathematics, and mathematics education.

Mathematics Option


The purpose of the mathematics option is to give students an understanding of the structure of mathematics, to stimulate their interest in research, and to prepare them for graduate school.

The following courses are required for the mathematics option: 16 Credit Hours


Select Two courses listed below, including at least one 4000-level course.: 6 Credit Hours


Statistics Option


The statistics option is designed to give students a strong background in the science of gathering and analyzing data in preparation for employment or graduate study.

The following courses are required for the option in statistics: 15 Credit Hours


Six (6) hours of approved upper division electives, preferably including: 6 Credit Hours


Applied Mathematics Option


The applied mathematics option is designed for those students who wish to prepare for careers in business and industry.  Students pursuing this option are strongly encouraged to double major or minor in a science, business or computer science.

The following courses are required for the applied mathematics option: 19 Credit Hours

Mathematics Education Option


The Mathematics Education option leads to secondary certification in mathematics. The secondary certification licensure is designed for individuals desiring to teach mathematics in grades 7-12, in both middle and high-school settings. The Professional Education Minor is also required for secondary certification.

Professional Education Minor: 23 Credit Hours


Required for licensure in all endorsement areas: K-6, 4-8, and 7-12

Successful completion of this minor, successful completion of Clinical Practice (with seminar), and Tennessee-mandated licensure examinations leads to teaching licensure for grades K-6, 4-8, and 7-12. Testing requirements, electronic portfolio development, and other prerequisites for provisional admission and full admission to Teacher Education will require consultation with an education advisor. For students not seeking licensure but a minor in Professional Education, contact the School of Education Director.
