Requirements and Documents for Admission
The prerequisite for pursuing the M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology degree is 15 hours in psychology or related courses. The 15 hour credits may include, introduction to IO Psychology (APSU PSY 4500 Psychology Applied to Work), General Psychology, Social Psychology, Research Methods, Statistics, Measurement, Group Dynamics, Human Factors, Occupational Safety and Health Psychology, Cross-cultural Psychology, Learning and Motivation, Cognition, and Personality. Related courses from allied fields (management, public administration, sociology etc.) may be counted toward this 15 hour requirement. Those who have relevant work experience may contact the program coordinator to see if any consideration toward this requirement would be possible.
Students should plan a specified program with their graduate committees. If seeking a master’s degree in IO Psychology, candidates must request admission to candidacy before completing nine hours of graduate course work. Undergraduate faculty who instructed you and can verify your academic ability should complete your recommendation forms. If you are pursing the masters degree after a long gap in education letter of recommendation from a work supervisor/professional who can commend on your potential to successfully complete graduate education could be submitted.
Psychology Department Admission Policy
Psychology Department Graduate Program Admission Policy: Admission to the M.S. in Counseling Program (both Community Counseling and School Counseling concentrations) andM.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology Program is competitive and selective. Admission to the College of Graduate Studies requires a minimum GRE verbal score of 350, a minimum GRE quantitative score of 350 (we expect comparable scores for the new version of the GRE), and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.5. Meeting minimum admission standards, however, does not ensure that an applicant will be offered admission into a graduate program in psychology. Applicants who are admitted typically have a GPA of 3.0 or above and/or GRE scores that exceed the minimum scores required for admission to the College of Graduate Studies. A variety of factors are taken into account in admissions including undergraduate GPA, GRE scores, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and number of available openings in the program of interest. All completed applications will be reviewed. Priority admission will be given to applicants whose files are completed and who meet admission requirements prior to Februaruy 1st for fall admission.
The Psychology Department does not grant conditional admissions. Priority deadline is November 1st for Spring admissions and February 1st for Fall admissions. This would mean that the review of applications begins on this date and will be ongoing. Later applications will be considered based upon openings. Applicants to the Department of Psychology must be formally admitted to the department before they can enroll in graduate classes.

Admission Decisions
The psychology department makes admission decisions from Feb 1 to July 31 for Fall semester start and Nov. 1st-Dec. 31st for Spring semester start.
International Student Admission*
The APSU College of Graduate Studies handles all international student admissions. You must submit the following items well in advance of the semester for which you are seeking admission:
- Applications and complete, certified copies of official transcripts, certificates, diplomas and degrees translated to English
- Proof of proficiency in the English language. A paper-based score of 500 or a computer-based score of 173 on the TOEFL Examination is required of applicants whose native language is not English.
- Evidence of financial resources sufficient to pay educational expenses.
- Documentation of an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
If you are transferring to APSU from a foreign institution, you must provide a copy of a course-by-course equivalency review performed by an educational credentials agency.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology
(34 semester hours offered exclusively online)
The industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology concentration will educate students to design, develop, implement and evaluate psychologically based human resources interventions in organizations. The scientist-practitioner model will be employed in the belief that effective practice is grounded in a solid exposure to research. The primary goal of the program is to prepare graduates for entry-level positions as “master’s level I/O practitioners” in business, industry or government. The program has been developed in accordance with the Guidelines for Education and Training at the master’s level in Industrial/Organizational Psychology published by Division 14 of the American Psychological Association. Prerequisites: 18 hours of undergraduate psychology courses, which should include a course in industrial and organizational psychology. Other courses may include social psychology, learning cognition, personality, statistics, research methods and measurements. Possible changes in requirements may significantly alter this program of study. Please consult with the Program Coordinator of Industrial/ Organizational Psychology for current information. * Electives may come from the psychology department or other departments offering graduate programs. Specific courses must be approved by the I/O psychology program coordinator or the student’s major professor. PSY 5730 - Practicum Industrial and Organizational Psychology may be taken as an elective course.
** Students who wish to pursue the six hour thesis option, in leiu of two electives and a comprehensive exam, must have earned a combined GPA of 3.5 in PSY 5000 and PSY 5575 and complete a Change of Program of Study.
