Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language Concentration (TESOL)


Students who are interested in teaching children or adults who are non-English nativespeakers online, abroad, in local non-public school system settings, such as undergraduateTESOL/ELL programs, ESL institute, private schools, international English Language Trainingcompanies, etc., will benefit from the academic and professional opportunities offered byTESOL MAT program at APSU.

Throughout the TESOL MAT program, which is offered by College of Education at APSUaccredited by CAEP/NCATE, students will be engaged in current research in severalacademic areas including linguistics, literacy, assessment, and pedagogy related toTESOL/ELL, and will be provided opportunities to gain authentic TESOL/ELL teachingexperience through completing field teaching capstone projects in authentic ELL classrooms,local or abroad. Excellent graduates will be recommended to appropriate teaching positionsin partner institutes/colleges/schools, local or abroad.

This 12-month Master of Arts in Teaching (Non-Licensure M.A.T.) with Teaching English toSpeakers of Other Languages (TESOL) concentration program is designed for candidateswho are interested in possessing a high level of knowledge of contemporary theories,pedagogies, and research in
TESOL curriculum and instruction, and/or pursuing a position of teaching English as asecond/foreign language to adult or child learners in the United States or abroad. Uponsuccessful completion of the 30 credit hour interdisciplinary coursework, candidates will beawarded a Master’s Degree (Non-Licensure M.A.T.) and TESOL certificate concurrently.

The TESOL MAT program is developed and taught by TESOL/ELL-credentialed faculty whobring their unique expertise, years of hands-on experience of teaching TESOL/ELL, andpractical insight into the classroom, and prepare candidates to be successful classroomteachers in a wide variety of institutional settings and cultural contexts, within and outsideof the United States. Both online and on-ground hybrid options are available to completethe program.
