  • MUS 1550 - Applied Composition LD

    Description: Entry level for Applied Composition lessons.  Depending on the experience and abilities of the student, lessons will encourage students to work with basic musical ideas and learn techniques for developing those ideas. Basic skills in orchestration, score preparation and performance in chamber and solo music.

  • MUS 1610 - Pep Lab Band

    Course Changes: Description change to begin Spring 2017.
    Description:  Rehearse and perform musical presentations for APSU home basketball games, post-season tournaments, and other campus events. Open to all students.  Audition and demonstration of basic skills is required (email instructor prior to Nov. 1). Participation in a pre-determined number of performances is required, all of which are on evenings and weekends.
  
  • MUS 1630 - Marching Band

    Description: Rehearse and perform musical and visual presentations for APSU events on and off campus. Open to all students. Audition and demonstration of basic skill is required (email instructor prior to May 1). Participation in all performances is required, and many are on Saturdays.     Description: Exposes music majors to the varied functions and forms music has in culture, with particular emphasis on non-western types.  The study of traditional music, contemporary indigenous music, and musical fusions created and used by a variety of cultures are points of entry for exploring and understanding societies highly differentiated from our own.

    Description: A survey of all kinds of music widely available in present-day America, designed to improve listening skills and discrimination.
  
  • MUS 2140 - Introduction to Jazz Harmony

    Description: Spelling and analysis of chords and the creation scales characteristics of jazz.  Class time will be used to analyze and practice material created by established jazz artists.
  
  • MUS 2141 - Jazz Harmony Performance

    Description: This course extends the Intro to jazz Harmony course providing a lab experience, with either a live or a recorded rhythm section performing in the jazz style, allowing the students to improve their improvisational skills in a controlled environment and apply skills discussed in previous course.

    Description: Addresses many of the State Department of Education competencies including curriculum, musical assessment, and managerial competencies necessary for the 21st century music teacher. A history of music in education and various philosophies of education will be examined. Four (4) hours of field experience will be required

    Description: An examination and application of elementary music curricula, resources, and pedagogical approaches of Kodály, Orff, Jacques-Dalcroze, and Gordon.  Additional topics include assessment, technological applications, PRAXIS preparation, and guitar, recorder, and Orff-instrument proficiencies.
