Description of Major

Sociology is the systematic study of society in all of its forms ranging from the interaction of individuals to the dynamics of large organizations. The sociology major emphasizes the theoretical and applied aspects of the field of sociology. Applied Sociology is the use of sociological theories and methods to analyze and address personal, structural, and societal issues that exist in our everyday lives. Students majoring in sociology will be able to apply a sociological perspective in a wide variety of careers in such sectors as business, healthcare administration, criminal justice, social services, and government. Since the discipline involves investigative skills and working with diverse groups, sociology also provides a valuable foundation for careers in journalism, education, politics, public relations, business, or public administration. Students majoring in sociology are provided the necessary  preparation to pursue future graduate work in the social sciences ranging from the M.A. to the Ph.D. and the APSU Department of Sociology has a strong track record for placing undergraduates in top graduate programs in sociology and related social science disciplines.  All sociology majors are required to complete a departmental exit exam during the semester preceding graduation.
