Description of Major

Radiologic science is more than providing patient care and diagnostic images. Some radiologic professionals obtain images that allow physicians to diagnose diseases and injuries. Others administer high doses of ionizing radiation to treat cancer and other conditions. Radiologic science requires a commitment to compassionate care to all patients. If you are ready to become part of a field that saves lives every day, Austin Peay State University’s Radiologic Science program can start you on your way! The degree is designed to prepare students for application to the radiography, radiation therapy and nuclear medicine technology concentrations. Additionally, students who complete the BSRS will meet eligibility requirements for admission to diagnostic medical sonography certificate programs in Tennessee and beyond.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Radiologic Science Program is to provide training in the field of radiologic science. The primary goal is to fulfill the needs of healthcare providers in the community and surrounding regions. A successful healthcare provider needs critical thinking and technical skills to offer the best possible care. Students are prepared to meet these requirements through various levels of training. Methods include theory, clinical practice, didactic learning, laboratory testing, and competency testing in classroom and clinical settings. Upon successful completion of the degree, graduating students completing the radiography, radiation therapy or nuclear medicine concentrations will meet the requirements for an entry-level position in radiography, radiation therapy or nuclear medicine. Potential sonographers will have a well-rounded radiology background and will be eligible for certificate programs in diagnostic medical sonography.
