Emergency Management Minor

The Minor in Emergency Management (EM) at Austin Peay State University was carefullydeveloped based upon the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) subject-mattercompetency areas. APSU’s EM Minor provides broad-based exposure to the body ofknowledge of value and relevance to emergency responders/first responders as well asemergency administrators with regard to preparing, mitigating, and responding to thenatural and human-made disasters and emergencies. The EM minor is geared to assist inthe education, training and development of professional emergency managers withreference to help them acquire or develop the following skills: (1) knowledge of the full-range of natural and technological threats facing the United States, (2) awareness aboutsystems and techniques for managing community vulnerabilities, (3) knowledge of hazardvulnerability analysis, hazard mitigation, recovery, and response, (4) communication skillsinside and outside organizations, and (5) organizational (management) skills, includingstrategic planning, human resources, and political management skills.
