The Department of Languages and Literature offers a Foreign Languages Major with concentrations, specializations, and minors in Classical Civilization, Classical Languages, French, German, Greek, Latin, and Spanish. Students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee must also take LING 4400. We also strongly recommend one study abroad course from SPAN 304A or SPAN 304B for Spanish licensure; FREN 3040 for French licensure; or GERM 3040 for German licensure; or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language. Students must also complete the Professional Education minor and Student Teaching. Teacher licensure for grades 7-12 is available in French, German, Spanish, and Latin through concentrations and specializations in the Foreign Languages major. Foreign language majors who transfer from other colleges and universities must earn at least six (6) hours of coursework in each of the two foreign languages taken at Austin Peay. An oral or, in the case of ancient languages, written proficiency exam and a portfolio are graduation requirements for all Foreign Language majors. Students must see their advisor for more information. A minor is required. It is recommended that students seeking licensure for teaching grades 7-12 in Tennessee take one study abroad course or present evidence of an acceptable intensive experience abroad in the target language. Students are able to take one-semester of SPAN 4900- Spanish Internship to fulfill the requirements of one course in any of the elective areas.
