6-8 Middle School (Social Studies) Concentration

The 6-8 Middle School (Social Studies) Licensure Program at APSU provides comprehensive coursework that
integrates courses in the general education core, the major, and the professional education minor. The major
prepares candidates to teach social studies in grades 6-8. This program meets all state standards. Courses in the
major include methods courses with required field experience that prepares candidates to teach in grades 6-8.
The goals of the 6-8 Middle School (Social Studies) Program are to provide candidates with the skills and
knowledge to be able to (1) teach the interdisciplinary field of social studies to middle school students, (2) design
and implement formative and summative assessment of learning that also informs teaching practice, (3) manage
the middle school classroom, and (4) design and implement instruction across the core content areas of history,
geography, civics, and economics at the middle grades level.

Concentration Requirements
Concentration Guided Electives
- Complete nine hours from ECON, GEOG or POLS 1000-4999.
- Complete nine hours from HIST 3000 - 4999.
