The Medical Laboratory Science major is recommended for students interested in pursuing a career in the clinical laboratory, biomedical science, forensic science, public health, or medical research. In addition, the Medical Laboratory Science major is excellent preparation for professional or graduate school careers in research or industry. APSU has campus-based and online four-year bachelor’s degree programs. There are three concentrations within the degree plan. The concentrations are Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, and the online MLT to MLS bridge program. The Biomedical Science concentration is designed as both a pre-medical laboratory science degree and for those that decide not to pursue national certification in medical laboratory science. The Medical Laboratory Science concentration is for students accepted to the medical laboratory science senior professional year. It includes both campus-based didactic courses and practical courses at affiliate hospital clinical laboratories. The MLT to MLS concentration is designed as a bridge program for nationally certified MLT to reach the Medical Laboratory Science certification. Upon successful completion of the four-year program, a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS) is awarded. A program certificate is awarded for completion of the accredited professional program concentrations in Medical Laboratory Science MLT to MLS.

Students must complete a separate admission packet to apply for the senior year. Requirements for acceptance include: overall grade point average of 2.5 or higher and generally a “C” or better in science courses, application and essay, coursework completion, official transcripts, and references.

Accreditation

The Medical Laboratory Science (Medical Technology) program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and approved by the Medical Laboratory Board for the State of Tennessee.
