The College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CoSTEM) provides studies for students in the areas of agriculture, astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering physics, engineering technology, geosciences, information technology, mathematics, medical technology, radiologic technology, and physics. Our outstanding discipline-based programs are student-centered and designed to prepare students for responsible positions at all levels of research, industry, education, medicine, and government positions. We emphasize degree programs relevant to regional economic and market trends, designed to enable graduates to compete in the global economy and foster lifelong learning skills.

Our mission is to promote scientific literacy while emphasizing the process, content, and interdisciplinary nature of science, and to develop critical thinking skills to enhance verbal and written communication abilities, encourage reasoned debate on scientific issues, and promote civic responsibility.

Our goal is to provide professional training at the undergraduate and graduate levels, while serving as a foundation for a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics, as well as to provide training for allied health professions and pre-professional training in preparation for careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and veterinary science. In addition, we encourage collaborative research with faculty, internships, and other learning experiences that facilitate transition to work or graduate and professional education.

Choosing Your Major
Please review the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics website to review the various majors available in their college.  Students will be able to access detailed information about each major which will assist them with choosing their major.  For more information about the pre-professional health minor and the individual programs click on the following link: https://www.apsu.edu/costem/

Pre-Professional Health and Pre-Professional Programs

Pre-Professional Health Programs and other Pre-Professional programs (meaning students must attend a graduate program after completing their undergraduate degree), all require a unique set of pre-requisites that are dependent on each graduate program. Students wishing to pursue a pre-professional health program such as Pre-Medicine can locate detailed information about each of the programs on the Pre-Professional Health Programs’ website.  Go to the link below:

Bachelors Degree Professional Health Programs

The Bachelors degree programs in Medical Laboratory Science and Radiologic Science require specific prerequisites that include chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, and biology classes that are determined by each program. These professional health programs lead to national certifications in these areas of student.

Centers and Research Opportunities in the College of STEM

Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) all require a strong discipline knowledge base, as well as real world application of critical thinking and technical skills. In the College of STEM we are proud to offer our students many opportunities for these real-world experiences and application of critical thinking and technical skills. Many of these opportunities exist within our three Centers and Institute in CoSTEM as well as within each department.

The Center of Excellence for Field Biology is the only state appointed Center of Excellence dedicated to the study and preservation of biodiversity in the southeastern United States. Center researchers use field-based methods, along with laboratory approaches and bioinformatics, to address questions in ecology, evolution, systematics, and conservation. In addition, the headquarters for the Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI), which works to conserve, restore, and promote native grasslands of all types throughout the Southeast is housed in the College of STEM. Faculty, students and staff collaborate with 13 states to advance the hard work of discovering, conserving, and restoring species in our native grasslands.

The Geographic Information Systems Center (GIS Center), is comprised of researchers, professionals, and students who all come together to deliver innovative results for their clients’ needs and grant opportunities. The GIS Center has professionals in mapping, spatial data, mobile applications, desktop software, and more. Students and faculty collaborate with the GIS Center to provide small businesses and counties with the best value by maximizing any budget.

The Farm and Environmental Education Center is located within the city of Clarksville, and is composed of 440 acres of land that affords a bounty of environmental habitats and supplies immeasurable support to academic programs at Austin Peay, as well as to the community and state. Available for study through the Farm are livestock, crops, forests, wildlife and land formations. A state of the art $1-million Animal Science teaching facility is now operational and available for classes, labs and other agriculture activities.
