The B.F.A. in Theatre Arts is a Professional Degree. Each concentration in the B.F.A. Theatre Arts degree program will consist of 62 hours in the major. Acceptance in the B.F.A. program is through audition-only. Most Theatre and Dance classes are restricted to BFA/BA majors and minors. Exceptions must be approved by the instructor of record or by the Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. In addition to this degree, the Department of Theatre and Dance also offers a B.A. in Theatre Arts with concentrations in Dance and Theatre, a Theatre Minor, and a Dance Minor. Admission Criteria Entrance into the B.F.A. Theatre Arts program and scholarship consideration is by way of a successful audition and/or portfolio review and interview.

At the time of audition, Acting, Dance, and Musical Theatre students must submit the following:

  • Resume
  • Headshot
  • two Letters of Recommendation
  • up-to-date transcripts that indicate cumulative GPA of high school and/or previous college work.

At the time of audition, Design and Stage Management students must submit the following:

  • Resume
  • Personal Photo
  • two Letters of Recommendation
  • up-to-date transcripts that indicate cumulative GPA of high school and/or previous college work.

Students are eligible for Scholarship consideration once they have officially been admitted by the university.

Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in the major and 2.5 overall GPA to continue in the program. If a student’s GPA falls below a 3.0 in the major, it will result in the student being placed on probation the following semester. Probation may result in ineligibility for casting or other department production positions and will entail being ineligible for departmental sponsored travel. If grades do not improve the student may be released from the program. Continuation in the program requires an Annual Review. Negative reviews may lead to probation or dismissal from the program.

Production Audition Requirements:

  • All BFA Acting students must audition for every main stage play and musical.
  • All BFA Musical Theatre students must audition for every main stage play, musical and dance concert.
  • All BFA Dance students must audition for every main stage musical and dance concert.

Although BFA Design and Stage Management students are encouraged to audition for main stage productions, they will often be assigned a design, management, or technical role for a production. Failure to fulfill these audition requirements will result in being placed on probation and may lead to dismissal from the program.
